    What is Galvanizing?

  • Galvanizing is the process of coating steel or iron with zinc to prevent corrosion. Common methods include hot-dip galvanizing, where metal is dipped in molten zinc, and electro-galvanizing, which uses electroplating. The zinc layer acts as a protective barrier and sacrificially corrodes to protect the base metal, making galvanizing durable, cost-effective, and ideal for construction, automotive, and outdoor uses.

HOW CORROSION AFFECTS YOUR METAL

Corrosion is a natural chemical process where metals tend to revert to their original, lower-energy ore state (e.g., iron ore), following the Law of Entropy. Pure metals are rare in nature and usually exist as compounds.

Corrosion reverses metallurgy: when exposed to oxygen and water, metals form oxides, sometimes combining with sulfides and carbonates. Studying corrosion is vital, as it causes over $400 billion in annual damage in the U.S. (about 3% of GDP), emphasizing the need for better understanding and prevention.
